Kitesurfing in Ilha do Guajiru

The largest lagoon in Brazil
Ilha do Guajiru,

is on the northeast coast of Brazil about 2 hours drive away from Fortaleza in the municipality of Itarema. It is a very special spot because of its formation; an extensive sandstrip 500m wide and 4km long separates the open ocean from the biggest lagoon in the whole of the northeast of Brazil.

With its magnificent, turquoise lagoon surrounded with palm trees, white sand dunes, a wide selection of posadas just at the doorstep of the kite spot and strong consistent wind for 8 months of the year is what makes this place increasingly popular for its flatwater amongst kite lovers.

Characteristics of the spot

Not only does this main spot in Ilha do Guajiru have an enormous lagoon formed by a sandstrip but there are also a few spots to practise kitesurf which are really worth visiting.

Praia da Barra: This is the main spot in the middle of the lagoon infront of all of the posadas. Here you have to pay particular attention to the tides because on low tide there is not enough water in the lagoon to kitesurf. It is only on medium tide and high tide that you can kitesurf with flat water on medium tide and choppier conditions on high tide. But realistically you will find a bit of everything everyhere because the lagoon is just so big.

Secret spot: This is a spot that is found on the windward part of the lagoon and can be accessed by asking a local fisherman for a quick ride in his boat. You’ll find flat water on the lagoon side and by crossing the sandstrip along a narrow stretch 50m wide you’ll arrive at the open sea where you’ll encounter all types of conditions depending on the tide (flat water and waves). The landscape here is just spectacular, completely wild.

Praia do Guajiru: Situated on the leeward side where the lagoon meets with the sea, this spot has perfect flat water on a low tide with the advantage that you can access the sea at any moment.

Lagoon: This is another flat water lgoon that can be reached by doing a downwind from Praia da Barra, via the open sea and arriving at a point where you would have to cross a small section of sand to enter the lagoon. To return you would have to do another downwind which means that you have to be in good shape to do this trip. The alternative would be to ask a fisherman to do the crossing in his boat. In both cases you would need to go well prepared taking food and drink with you beacuse this lagoon is completely isolated.

In Ilha do Guajiru winds range between 18 and 38 knots blowing constantly from mid June to the mid February. It can get fairly gusty at times due to the sandstrip that protects the lagoon from the open sea but there are plenty of places where you’ll find the perfect wind; clean and constant.

The temperature ranges between 26˚C and 38˚C with warm water around 27˚C all year round.

Ilha do Guajiru is a spot where everyhting is organised and revolves around kitesurfing and chilling out. There are a great number of quality pousadas which tend to arrange and offer other activities during the day and night.

The village of Itarema is only 10 minutes drive or a nice stroll away.

You could also go fishing during your stay with one of the local fishermen. Here there is possibly as much to fish in the lagoon as there is in the ocean; a unique experience.
