Kitesurfing in Langebaan & Western Coast

Unique spots offering all kind of conditions
The Western Coast
of South Africa is wilder than the immediate surroundings of Cape Town thanks to its dry vegetation of intense greens which constrasts against the vast white sand dunes and the large sweeps of white beaches that run for kilometres. The landscapes we get to see along this coast are truly spectacular.

In this part of the country the southeaster wind also blows strongly throughout the high season, meaning you’ll find some superb spots along the coast which offer excellent conditions for all kitesurfing levels. Out of them all, Langebaan is the most well-known.

Spots’ Characteristics
This is a great wave spot, although for it to work well every element has to be just right. When winds from the east or west are blowing and the swell is good, the waves forming in this break are some of the best on the whole West Coast. It’s true that the wind can get a bit gusty, but once you’re riding one of these waves, you’ll undoubtedly experience that exhiliration and pure adrenaline feeling. This goes without saying that this spot is only suited for advanced riders.
Langebaan is a small, cute village beside a huge crystal clear blue lagoon which is part of the West Coast National Park. We find two main spots in Langebaan:

1- Main Beach: This spot is located on Langebaan’s main beach at the entrance of the lagoon, a large beach with white fine sand and beautiful views of the whole bay. Conditions here are perfect for beginners and riders who want to improve their freestyle or old school tricks – with low and medium tides there’s flat water and with high tide it’s mainly choppy, although you can still find some

2- Shark Bay: This spot is located deeper into the lagoon. Here the water is a bit warmer than in Main Beach and it has a clear caribbean-turquoise colour. This beautiful spot works with medium and high tides creating shallow and perfectly flat water, ideal for beginners and freestyle riders. Here the wind can be a bit gusty sometimes, but not enough to have an uncomfortable kite session, and don’t worry depsite the name, there are no sharks here!

Both of these spots work with southeasterly winds but as strange as it may sound, the fact that there are good conditions in one spot on a particular day does not necessarily mean that the conditions are equally as good at another. Therefore we encourage you to check both spots before deciding where you’ll spend your kiting session.

Saldanha is located at the north of the Langebaan Lagoon, opposite the village. The wind here blows the same as on Main Beach and the water conditions are very similar. It’s a good spot for freeriders and freestyle. It’s also where downwinds coming from Langebaan and Shark Bay tend to finish.
A bit further north from Saldanha Bay, we find Velddrif, a rare spot which offers amazing flat water conditions. It’s at a river mouth therefore it’s made up of pretty wide canals where freestyle and old school riders will have a blast. Only suited for intermmediate and advanced riders.
It looks like a typical charming Greek fishing village located in a small bay where every morning local fishermen arrive with boats filled with plenty of crayfish and mussels. It’s well worthwile coming to Paternoster just for the food. The quality of the restaurants is extraordinary and the surroundings are gorgeous which makes Paternoster a must visit.

Kitesurfing conditions here are good when there is a swell and the SW wind is blowing. When this happens there are perfectly clean right and left waves, great for waveriding. When the SE wind blows, conditions are kind of off-shore, therefore the spot is only suitable for experienced riders. Nevertheless, it’s a nice quiet spot that you’d likely be able to enjoy with only a handful of other kites.
