The East Coast

of South Africa goes from False Bay up to Santa Lucia – a stretch of 1700km with warmer waters, typical of the Indian Ocean, and more tropical surroundings and climate, which becomes increasingly noticeable the further away from Cape Town. This part of South Africa is less known both for kitesurfing and traditional tourism. Without travelling too far away from Cape Town, we can show you three different spots which is perfect for those who have a real sense of adventure.

Spots’ characteristics
Hermanus is 127km away from Cape Town and offers both a lagoon and open sea spots. Both are suited to all kinds of levels, although beginners will most likely prefer riding in the lagoon as it offers perfect flat water conditions. In the open sea we find nice medium sized waves, perfect for improving waveriding techniques. This spots works perfectly with SE winds and with SW conditions it can get a bit gusty.
In Struisbaai is a flat water and a wave spot. The first one is found near the Harbour and in order to get here, you’d have to set up the kite at Main Beach and do an upwind. It’s worthwile the hassle as the flat water conditions here are amazing. This spot works well with both SE and SW winds

Main Beach is a large beach forming a bay where waves set up nicely both right and left with SE and SW winds. The SW can be gusty at times, therefore the more we move to the west point of the bay, the cleaner it’ll be.

This spot is the jewel of South Africa for kitesurfing. A sand bank at a rivermouth shapes a perfect large flat water lagoon where conditions are ideal for freestyle and for beginners. In the open sea, conditions are also good for beginners, although the lagoon is much more suitable. The spot in itself is beautiful and it’s completely worthwile the 300km drive from Cape Town in order to spend at least a couple of days here. You must be cautious when leaving your stuff at the beach as with high tide the water level can practically cover most of the beach and you can loose everything!
